Adolescent obesity is a medically defined disease that has grown so much that it is now considered an epidemic. This is quite dangerous, for childhood obesity could reduce life expectancy by more than five years. essentially, a reduction in life expectancy could be fatal to the future of the United States. It also doesn't help that only two percent of children in America hold a properly balanced diet. Although adolescent obesity is primarily due to lack of personal initiative, environmental factors have promoted a sedentary lifestyle in terms of technological inventions/advancements, high scale fast food advertisement, and a decreased push for activeness.
Environmental changes over time have been a vital contributor to childhood obesity. Technological advancements lead to physical inactivity which could essentially be described as the primary cause of weight gain. rather than riding a bike or walking to a specific destination, the production of motorized vehicles such as electronic scooters or hover boards allow transportation with no effort whatsoever. Also, increasing accessibility to video games persuades children to avoid the light of day. Rather than playing "a game of tag that lasts for hours," children can "play with friends in a virtual world," (Document D). Yesterday's kids were determined to achieve a six-pack. Today's kids are focused on achieving strong thumb muscles; it's simply pitiful. Also, advertisement of these sedentary promoting items play a large role in adolescent obesity. Everywhere you walk you can find a game stop or a video game sign drawing you closer to buy their product and stay inside all day. Video game companies might as well produce a sign that says "stay inside all day! It's fun!" The same ideology may be referred to in the fast food industry. Mass advertisement with vibrant colors and fictional characters allow for children to incorporate fast food into daily life. For example, the multibillion dollar corporation, McDonald's, has produced more than one-thousand playgrounds at their sites worldwide. Though playgrounds do promote physical activity, the purpose of the playground's are "to be an effective lure," (Document C). Also, these playgrounds do not have the equipment to burn off a simple happy meal. Soon enough, with the awful diet of fast-food, Twig-thin Timmy will evolve into Tubby Timmy.
The primary cause of adolescent obesity is the lack of motivation in children. Although, environmental factors promote this lifestyle. In fact, the environment in which children spend the most (the school), has led to the enhancement on the sedentary lifestyle. A primary example of this ideal is the fact that "more than fifty percent of the nation's schools have eliminated physical education altogether," (Document A). This action disallows for the youth of America to receive their vital exercise per day. Without this physical education, children simply go through the motions of school, go home and do homework, then go to sleep. The school system is providing the lack of motivation. Rather than promoting physical activity, the school system drowns children in homework and recommends little physical activity. This ideal may be closely seen within the political cartoon which shows an obese child sitting on the couch reading an "inactivity book," (Document B). The message reveals that adolescents simply complete their assignments, eat, and go to bed with nothing in between. The environment that our youth live in allows for little motivation to pursue more than just the books.
The rise of obesity in the United States has officially become an epidemic. The youth show little signs of drive and motivation to change this, and this has resulted from environmental factors that promote inactivity. Advancements in technology, a promotion of a sedentary lifestyle, and high scale advertisements of dietary deficient foods have allowed for our youth to become overweight.

Reflection
The obesity essay was written along with the creativity class essay on the same date: April 18, 2017. This is by far my most favorite synthesis essay due to its ability to show my strengths to incorporate concrete evidence into a proper argument. The essay flows and provides proper commentary to explain the argument to a greater extent. Also, just as the research essay and creativity class essay had, the obesity piece was very sentimental to me. This is due to my opinion on childhood obesity and my strong opposition towards the idea. This piece may go down as the top five essays that I have written in my high school career.
