This school year has been one in which has prepared me for greater opportunity in the future. Goals were set, fears were conquered, and success was achieved. With the introduction of a great teacher, excellent preparation work, and help from my peers, I have reached a point in which I am properly prepared for what is to come in following years. Whether it be reading a book in advanced placement English 12, or writing an essay for my college applications, I am by far more prepared than I was at beginning of the year. There are several aspects of this year that have grown on me as an individual. Although there are a few things that I would have changed, this year has provided me with the tools to achieve greater opportunity. With the absence of this year's teachings, I would simply be lost. This year may have been the greatest year I have had as an English student in terms of growth.
As I sit here and ponder upon the grammatical and vocabulary errors that I view in my previous essays, I am in complete distraught. Although, as I view the pieces in which I produced later in the year, I see these mistakes have dissolved. For example, one of the most troublesome problems in which I had this year was the act of proper flow in my essays. Although, once we began structural exercises, the flow in my pieces improved to a great extent. This development may be closely seen within the Obesity Essay, in which my structure is excellent.Another typical error in my writing was the presence of a monotone voice. Though, with the introduction of projects such as the fallacy presentation, humor was incorporated into my writing. This has always been a problem in my pieces, for my tone is typically more scientific-like and factual based. So, with exercise on fallacies and satire my writing has become more diverse throughout the year. Rather than a single, monotone mood my writing has evolved into a flowing conformity. Also, the single-most important item that I have improved on the most was my multiple choice taking. As we went over the timed multiple choice packets that we did in class, I was revitalized with new ways to approach complex multiple choice problems. Soon enough, my multiple choice answering improved in all of my classes, not just English. My development as a writer and thinker increased in all areas of education.
Though there were several weaknesses I had strengthened during the year, i also improved my strong areas as well. For example, as previously stated, one of my strengths are the use of cold hard facts in my writing in order to provide a scientific/statistical tone to the essay. And, my incorporation of these facts were pushed to the next level through strong commentary. This may be closely be seen in the final draft of the research essay, in which the structure is excellent in providing an excellently terminated argument. With use of statistics followed by voice, it pushes the argument to the next level. Also, another one of my strengths is the use of a diverse vocabulary. And, with the passage of difficult reading passages throughout the year, my vocabulary has expanded a great deal due to the imitation of other authors’ writing styles.
So, as I come to a conclusion a great question comes to mind… how does language define thought, culture, and identity? And how is learning part of the life-long journey? Well the answer is quite complex. Language is a form of communication in which we establish social hierarchy through. For example, an individual who provides a diverse form of language would be placed much higher than an individual whose favorite words are curses. Language also determines thought processing as well. Those who contain the techniques of mastering their particular language are the ones who has the least ease in solving very difficult problems. With increased language skill comes a greater and more diverse thought process. And, not to mention the fact that language is the number one determinant in culture. Language defies us as individuals, whether it be on social media on an instagram post or a speech in which our president provides. English is who we are as members of the United States and progression of the language is necessary in the growth of your status as a scholar all around.
It is very important to recognize the fact that learning is one of the most important aspects in the long journey of life. If you think about it, everything derives from education. Whether it be an NFL offensive tackle or a trusty neurosurgeon, each individual was at one time recognized for their academic ability. And although they are at different levels of smartness, they were once recruited due to their academic ability. So, it is evident that where you stand as a scholar has great influence on where you will end up in the long run. Those who have taken education seriously will end up living a leisurely life while those who remain uneducated will contain a long life of debt. Education determines your career path, simple as that. And, this is why it is important to take every opportunity you have been offered rather than lead on a reactive lifestyle. For example, if I hadn’t taken the opportunity to up my grade every time I would not have a 4.1 GPA as I have right now. This GPA has led me to receive offers from ivy league schools such as Harvard and Yale for kicking. And, hopefully this will propel me in my career path as a sports medicine physician. And, this may all go back to language. The skill of proper communication has led me to what I am today.
This year will be one to go down in the books, for it saw the copious amounts of struggle, the late nights, and the monthly break-down. Although, I have reached the finish line and am off to strive for greater development as a writer, reader, thinker, and overall better person. With the amount of workload that I took on this year I feel unstoppable for years to come. My junior year English class has allowed for optimal development in all aspects of my life, not just reading and writing.
